METHOD TO OUR MADNESS
Method to Our Madness
Many of you might think that I, Tina Crawford is the Magic behind Castleton Candle but truth be told it’s this guy right here! In 2008, my husband Dave came up with the idea to pour our own candles after researching paraffin wax and the effects of it with people who have asthma. Our son Aiden had pretty significant asthma, as did my mom and we found the soot from paraffin candles triggered their breathing issues. With that said, Dave fell in love with the clean burn of soy wax and set off to make candles on the side during the off season of his normal gutter business.. yes I said gutters.. from seamless rain gutters to hand pouring soy candles! Please meet David Crawford our master pourer 🔥
Things to Know About Soy
We are sure you are going to love soy wax, as much as we do. Because soy wax burns at a lower temperature than paraffin wax, it tends to throw a better scent, as well as burns cleaner and longer. Soy wax is hydrogenated soybean oil that is used as renewable and biodegradable alternative to paraffin wax in candle making. Soy was investigated for its tendency of producing soot and potentially harmful organic volatiles (e.g. formaldehyde) during candle burning. While a considerable amount of soot was produced from the combustion of paraffin candles under disturbed condition (simulated air movement), little or none was observed from soy wax candles. However, low level of formaldehyde was detected in paraffin candle fumes, but it was not present in significant quantity in the soy candle fumes.
Candle Care Tips
Candle Care Tip #1 ~ It’s always important to turn or rotate your jar candle to help get and even burn. Most surfaces are not 100% level and this can cause an uneven burn. Simply turn your candle to keep it happy and healthy.
Candle Care Tip #2 ~ It is recommended that your burn your candle for a minimum of 1 hour per inch in diameter. Therefore, we suggest that you burn your candle for at least 4 hours, as our jar has a 4″ Diameter. This will keep your candle happy and healthy!
Candle Care Tip #3 ~ Trimming your candle's wick helps reduce soot. Nothing worse than black soot in the air to make your jar look gross... Keeping a proper wick size also increases the life of your candle. Simply reduce any over sized mushrooming on the wick before lighting. Be careful not to break off too much or your candle wick might drown when a wax pool is formed. Soy wax burns at a lower temperature than paraffin wax therefore, it generally produces less soot and is better for the environment and your lungs!
